EDUCATION CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (ECL) COMPETITION GUIDELINES

1. OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION:
. The main objective of the Education Champions League (ECL) Competition is to foster reading habits among Nigerian secondary school students. Specifically, the competition will test for traits developed through reading – comprehension, analytical skills, general knowledge, reading fluency, as well as oral and written expressions.
2. COMPETITION BENEFITS:
* Competing schools will receive Certificates of Participation, and will be featured on the ECL website.
* Winners will receive special prizes and media coverage
* Prizes to finalists include cash gifts, Championship trophies, and institutional support.
* The total prize money to winners will be as follows
*1st Position: ₦10 m
*2nd Position: ₦5m
*3rd Position: ₦2.5m
. Specifically, 25% of the prize for each position will be applied by ECL to procure books for the school; 25% will be made available to the School as institutional support and 50% will go to the students who comprise the school’s team. Each student’s financial prize will be paid by ECL into an account nominated by the student’s parents.
3. TEXTS FOR THE COMPETITION:
. Each year, the ECL organisers will nominate the books on which the competition will be based.
. For the 2024 Competition, the books to be used are
– Simon Kolawole’s FELLOW NIGERIANS, IT’S ALL POLITICS
– Waziri Adio’s THE ARC OF THE POSSIBLE, and
– Bolaji Abdullah’s ON A PLATTER OF GOLD.
– Competing Schools are not required to read each book in its entirety. Instead, specific chapters from each book have been selected for purposes of the 2024 competition.
– All competitors will read the same material.
. All participating schools will receive copies of the recommended texts at the May 17, 2024 meeting with the Competition organisers.
. Each participating school will be represented at the said meeting by a senior official – the Principal or Vice-Principal. In their absence HODs or Subject teachers who will act as their school’s Competition Coach should attend.

4. COMPETITION TEAMS:
-Each participating institution is to be represented by a team of four (4) students.
– Schools are to send passport pictures of their representative teams within one month of receiving the Texts for the competition.
– The pictures and other relevant information of the Competitors (Schools and their respective teams) will be uploaded on the ECL website.
– Competitor team members must wear school uniforms and Identity cards during competition activities.
– Participating institutions may not change members of their team without approval by ECL. In any case, not more than one change will be permitted during the process unless under exceptional circumstances (such as illness or other obvious emergencies).
– Any participating school that makes unapproved substitutions will compete with a team less the number of unsuccessful substitutions.
5. THE COMPETITION PROCESS:
– The Competition will be organised in three (3) stages: Two elimination contests and the Finale.
– Competitors have a 60-second timeframe to answer one question in two attempts, after which, unless they answer correctly, they forfeit the opportunity.
– Any Competitor found to be engaging, or to have engaged, in questionable conduct will be disqualified
– All competitors answer an equal number of questions.
– Any question not correctly answered will be thrown open to all other competitors. The first to be recognised by the Quizmaster gets a chance.
– Where a participating institution correctly answers a question that the previous Competitor could not, it earns half the full value for that question as a bonus.
– The Competition will be concluded within one term of any academic year. In the event of unexpected delay/postponement, it may be extended into the first half of the subsequent term.
6. COMPETITION RESULTS:
* Schools will be ranked based on the total score of their 4-team members
* In the event of a tie, (an) additional question(s) will be used to break the tie.
* The Quizmaster’s/ judges’ decision is final and not subject to arbitration.
7. TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
* The Management of the ECL reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of the Competition. Any changes, however, will be communicated timely to all stakeholders via email.
